The Legend is a wooden roller coaster at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in Santa Claus, Indiana, that opened on May 6, 2000. Designed and built by Custom Coasters International, the ride is themed to Washington Irving’s ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,’ casting riders as Ichabod Crane fleeing through dark woods from the Headless Horseman.
The coaster stretches 4,042 feet of track and reaches a top speed of 59 mph, featuring four tunnels — one of which runs underground — a sweeping double helix, and multiple crossovers. A 2016 renovation added a double-down element and a new tunnel, keeping the experience fresh for returning riders.

The Ride Experience
Riders board two-across trains and are immediately plunged into a themed world of shadowy forest trails. The first drop sends the train hurtling 113 feet, the tallest of three major drops on the course. What sets The Legend apart technically is its second major drop: a spiral element in which the radius of the descent increases throughout, generating a consistent lateral force — a design innovation Custom Coasters International debuted with this coaster.
Four tunnels punctuate the layout, including one that dips below ground level, creating moments of complete darkness at speed. The double helix finale keeps the intensity high before the train rolls back into the station after a two-minute ride.
Awards and Legacy
Since opening, The Legend has earned a steady spot among the world’s top wooden roller coasters in the Golden Ticket Awards presented annually by Amusement Today, reaching as high as fourth place in 2002 and continuing to rank in the top 20 as recently as 2025. The coaster helped cement Holiday World’s reputation as a destination park for serious coaster enthusiasts.
Custom Coasters International, the firm that built The Legend, has since ceased operations, making this coaster part of a respected but finite portfolio. Its lasting popularity is a testament to the quality of its layout and the effectiveness of its Sleepy Hollow theming.
