Estadio BBVA opened on August 2, 2015, in Guadalupe, Nuevo León, a suburb just east of Monterrey, Mexico. Built to replace the aging Estadio Tecnológico after C.F. Monterrey’s 63-year run there, the venue quickly earned the nickname “El Gigante de Acero” (The Steel Giant) for its bold steel-framed design by architecture firms Populous and VFO alongside Federico Velasco.
The roughly $200 million project became the first football stadium in North America to earn LEED silver certification, thanks to features like extensive green space for rainwater filtration. Since opening, Estadio BBVA has hosted matches for the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship and served as a venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup under the name “Estadio Monterrey.”

Estadio BBVA’s grandstands are built at a steep 34-degree incline, keeping fans close to the pitch under FIFA’s spacing standards. From the northwest section, spectators get a dramatic backdrop view of the Cerro de la Silla, the saddle-shaped mountain that has become one of Monterrey’s most recognizable natural landmarks.
The stadium opened with an exhibition match against S.L. Benfica for the Eusébio Cup, drawing a sellout crowd of more than 50,000. It has since become one of the loudest venues in Liga MX, known for the passionate support of Rayados fans.

Beyond domestic league play, Estadio BBVA has hosted international competition, including eight matches during the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship. Its profile rose further as one of the venues selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where it operated under the name Estadio Monterrey and hosted four matches, including three group-stage games and a Round of 32 fixture.
The stadium’s sustainable design, including green spaces covering more than a third of its total footprint, has made it a reference point for environmentally conscious stadium construction in Latin America.
