Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium is the on-campus football home of the East Carolina University Pirates in Greenville, North Carolina. Opened in 1963 as Ficklen Memorial Stadium with just 10,000 seats, it has grown through decades of expansions into one of the largest stadiums among Group of Five programs, now holding about 50,000 fans on game days.

Known to Pirates fans as ‘Rowdy Dowdy’ for its loud, purple-clad crowds, the stadium underwent its most recent major upgrade in 2018-2019, a roughly $60 million project that added the TowneBank Tower with premium club seating, skyboxes, and modern media facilities. The playing surface itself is named Bagwell Field, a tribute dedicated in 1997.

From 10,000 Seats to Rowdy Dowdy

The stadium opened in 1963 with a capacity of just 10,000 seats and a construction cost of roughly $283,000. Steady expansions followed over the decades: 20,000 seats by the late 1960s, 35,000 by the late 1970s, and 43,000 by the late 1990s, before crossing the 50,000 mark with a 2009-2010 expansion that added new seating and scoreboards.

The 2018-2019 renovation that followed brought the TowneBank Tower, adding premium club seating and skyboxes along with upgraded broadcast and media facilities, modernizing a venue that had grown piecemeal for more than 50 years.

A Place in College Football History

Beyond its own growth, Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium carries a somber place in college football history. On November 14, 1970, East Carolina hosted Marshall University at the stadium; later that night, the chartered plane carrying the Marshall team home crashed, killing all 75 people aboard, a tragedy later chronicled in the film ‘We Are Marshall.’

Today the stadium is remembered for livelier reasons too, posting its all-time record crowd of 51,711 on September 3, 2022, for a matchup against NC State, a turnout that topped the venue’s listed capacity.
