DATCU Stadium is the home football venue for the University of North Texas Mean Green, sitting at the junction of Interstate 35E and 35W in Denton, Texas. Opened on September 10, 2011 as Apogee Stadium, the $78 million facility replaced the aging Fouts Field, which had hosted UNT football since 1952.
Designed by HKS, Inc., the stadium became known for its environmental features as much as its football, earning distinction as the first newly constructed college football stadium in the United States to achieve LEED Platinum certification. In 2023, DATCU Credit Union acquired the naming rights, and the venue was renamed DATCU Stadium ahead of that football season.

The Gameday Experience
Fans gather on fall Saturdays to watch the Mean Green take the field on the stadium’s artificial turf, with sightlines designed to keep the crowd close to the action despite the sizable capacity. The stadium replaced Fouts Field, a much older facility, giving UNT a modern home that better matched the program’s ambitions in the American Athletic Conference.
Beyond football, the venue has hosted other university and community events, benefiting from its central campus location near the interstate junction that makes it an easy landmark for visitors driving through Denton.
A Stadium Built Green
What set the stadium apart at its 2011 opening wasn’t just its size but its sustainability credentials. Three 120-foot wind turbines on site generate renewable power for the facility, while an extensive water retention system and permeable paving were engineered to manage stormwater runoff, features that helped it become the first newly built college football stadium in the country to earn LEED Platinum status.
Those environmental investments, paired with the HKS-designed bowl seating, made the stadium a case study for sustainable sports architecture even as it continued to serve its primary purpose as the Mean Green’s home turf.
