Thunderation is a steel mine train roller coaster at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri, that has sent riders rattling through the wooded Ozark hillside since it opened on April 10, 1993. Built by Arrow Dynamics, the ride’s stylized name, ThuNderaTion, nods to TNT and the park’s 1880s mining theme.
The coaster reaches a height of 81 feet and travels at speeds up to 48 mph over 3,022 feet of track, with no inversions but plenty of tight terrain-hugging turns. A ride lasts about 2 minutes and 10 seconds, taking two 6-car trains through a helix and a tunnel before the lift hill, which sits roughly three-quarters of the way through the layout rather than at the start.

The Ride Experience
Thunderation’s two trains, each carrying six cars for 36 riders, wind through thick Ozark woods before diving into a tunnel and a sweeping helix. Rather than climbing a lift hill right away, the layout builds momentum through terrain-following curves first, saving its chain lift for around the three-quarter mark of the ride.
Originally, the third and fifth cars in each train faced backward, giving those riders a different perspective on the twists and drops. Sometime after the 2010 season, Silver Dollar City reoriented all cars to face forward, standardizing the experience across the whole train.
A Branson Landmark Winding Down
For over three decades, Thunderation has been one of Silver Dollar City’s steadier thrill rides, prized for its family-friendly mix of speed and scenery rather than inversions or extreme height. Its mine train theming fits naturally alongside the park’s frontier and mining-era attractions.
In February 2026, Silver Dollar City announced that Thunderation would close permanently on January 2, 2027, giving fans a final stretch to experience the classic Arrow Dynamics coaster before it retires.
