Goliath is a steel hyper coaster at La Ronde in Montreal, Quebec, built by Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard. It opened to the public on May 13, 2006, as part of an $18.7 million investment, the largest single-ride expenditure in the park’s history at that time since La Ronde opened in 1967.
When it debuted, Goliath was the tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster in Canada, standing 174.8 feet tall and hitting a top speed of 68.4 mph. It held that title until May 2008, when Behemoth opened at Canada’s Wonderland, also a B&M creation, and took over as the country’s tallest and fastest coaster.

The Ride Experience
Goliath is a classic out-and-back hyper coaster with no inversions, relying instead on its 170.6-foot first drop and a series of seven camelback hills to deliver airtime. Riders board one of two trains, each seating 36 people in a single-row layout, for a ride that lasts about three minutes.
The coaster’s supporting structure required 150 foundations, 300 pilings, 106 supports, and 850 anchor bolts, reflecting the scale of the build for a park situated on Île Sainte-Hélène in the middle of the St. Lawrence River. For the 2016 season, La Ronde added a virtual reality option on Goliath, letting riders experience a themed overlay during the run.
A Canadian Coaster Milestone
Goliath’s opening in 2006 marked a turning point for La Ronde, giving the Six Flags-owned park a genuine record-holder among Canadian thrill rides. It briefly outranked every other coaster in the country on height, speed, and length.
That reign lasted two years. When Behemoth opened at Canada’s Wonderland in 2008, also built by Bolliger & Mabillard, it topped Goliath at 230 feet and 77 mph, pushing Goliath into the number-two spot among Canadian hyper coasters. Goliath held that second-place ranking until 2012, when Canada’s Wonderland debuted Leviathan, a 306-foot, 92 mph B&M giga coaster that became the new tallest and fastest ride in the country, moving Goliath further down the list.
