A Venue With Many Names
The arena has operated under several names since it opened as the NYNEX Arena in 1995. It became the Manchester Evening News Arena — widely known as the MEN Arena — in 1998, then Phones 4u Arena from 2013 to 2015, before reverting to plain Manchester Arena. In September 2020, online electrical retailer AO.com secured a naming-rights deal, giving the venue its current identity.
In 2001, trade publication Pollstar ranked it the busiest indoor arena in the world by ticket sales, and it has consistently ranked among the world’s top-performing venues ever since — a record that still stands more than two decades later.
Beyond the Music
The AO Arena has always been more than a concert hall. It hosted the swimming events at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and served as a warm-up venue for USA vs. Great Britain basketball ahead of the 2012 Olympics. The arena has also been a regular home for major boxing, staging bouts featuring Mike Tyson, David Haye, Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton, and Amir Khan.
A £50 million redevelopment program launched in 2022 doubled the standing floor capacity to around 6,200 and is set to push overall capacity toward 24,000, reinforcing the venue’s standing as one of Europe’s leading indoor entertainment destinations.
