Every big aquarium promises a trip around the world’s oceans. The Afrykarium in Wrocław, Poland, makes the opposite bet: one continent, done properly. Opened inside Wrocław Zoo in 2014, it is the world’s only oceanarium devoted entirely to the aquatic life of Africa, and with more than 15 million liters of water it earns 17th place on our list of the largest aquariums in the world.
The building itself, a long black monolith with a wave-shaped gash of glass, has become one of modern Poland’s most recognizable pieces of architecture.

One Continent Under One Roof
The Afrykarium was conceived to present complete African aquatic ecosystems rather than a greatest-hits reel of ocean life. Designed by architects Mariusz and Dorota Szlachcic and built between 2012 and 2014, the 160-meter reinforced-concrete hall was the first facility of its kind in Poland, and its 19 tanks are kept clean by a battery of 50 filtration systems.
Four Biotopes and a Namibian Beach
Inside, the route works through four African waterworlds. The Red Sea section opens with a 900-cubic-meter coral reef; East Africa pairs a hippo pool with cichlids from lakes Malawi and Tanganyika; the Mozambique Channel is the showpiece, 3.1 million liters of sharks and rays crossed by an acrylic tunnel; and the Congo jungle finale combines manatees in a 1.25-million-liter pool, Nile crocodiles, and a free-flight hall of African birds.
Outdoors, the building is flanked by a recreated Namibian Skeleton Coast: a 3.6-million-liter bay for Cape fur seals and a 2.46-million-liter penguin pool, separated by a ship-shaped restaurant whose deck doubles as a viewing terrace.
Part of Poland’s Oldest Zoo
The Afrykarium sits at the heart of Wrocław Zoo, Poland’s oldest zoological garden, whose 33 hectares house more than 10,000 animals, from insects to elephants. The oceanarium’s success helped push the zoo into the ranks of Europe’s most visited, and it remains the single biggest reason Wrocław features on European zoo itineraries.
