Vertigo launches from the top of the park’s Icon Tower at 250 ft 4 in (76.3 m), making it the tallest water slide ever built, a title certified by Guinness World Records. No other water slide on the planet, outside its twin on the same tower, comes within 80 feet of it.
The launch is as dramatic as the height: riders step into a capsule and wait for a trapdoor to drop out from under them, falling into the chute rather than pushing off. From a quarter of the way up a skyscraper, that is a very long moment.

Guinness World Records officially recognized the tallest water slide record at Meryal on October 6, 2024, crediting developer Qetaifan Projects with a measured height of 76.309 m (250 ft 4 in). Two slides share the mark: Vertigo, the trapdoor plunge, and The Fractionator, an enclosed tube that corkscrews down the same tower. Guinness has also declared the Icon Tower itself the tallest water slide structure in the world.
That single measurement rewrote the top of our ranking of the tallest water slides in the world — the previous record had stood more than 80 feet lower for nearly a decade.
The Icon Tower and Meryal Waterpark
Meryal is the anchor attraction of Qetaifan Island North off Lusail, and it is enormous: 45 rides and 52 slides, according to the park. The Icon Tower is its centerpiece, a 250-foot structure that dominates the skyline of the island. The park has quickly become a family-tourism landmark in Qatar and won the Qatar Tourism Award in 2025.
How Vertigo Compares
The record Vertigo shattered belonged to Verrückt at Schlitterbahn Kansas City, which stood 168 ft 7 in (51.38 m) when it opened in 2014. Verrückt closed in 2016 after a fatal accident and was demolished in 2018, and for years nothing approached its height. Vertigo didn’t approach it either — it sailed past by more than 80 feet. Today the nearest operating rivals, Brazil’s Kilimanjaro (163.7 ft) and the new twin slides at Türkiye’s Land of Legends, are all still shorter than Verrückt’s old mark plus a ten-story building of margin.
