The real question most parents have before a Kings Island trip isn’t “what’s the tallest coaster” — it’s “will my 3-year-old actually have anything to ride?” The honest answer: yes. Kings Island is best known for giants like Orion and The Beast, but its Planet Snoopy area (recently expanded with Camp Snoopy) was built specifically for small kids, and there’s a real lineup of rides scaled to them.

This guide walks through what a small child can ride with no height minimum at all, then what opens up at 36, 40 and 42 inches (91, 102 and 107 cm) — including the park’s first genuine roller coaster — plus practical notes on the Parent Swap Pass and measuring your child before you’re standing in line.

Stats at a Glance

  • Kids’ Area: Planet Snoopy (including the Camp Snoopy expansion)
  • First Roller Coaster At: 36 in (91 cm) — The Great Pumpkin Coaster
  • Companion Rule: Some rides post a lower ‘accompanied’ height below the solo minimum (e.g. Franklin’s Flyers: 44 in/112 cm alone, 36 in/91 cm with a companion); official ride pages don’t specify the companion’s required age
  • Rider Swap: Yes — the Parent Swap Pass, issued at the Help Center near the front gate

Rides With No Height Minimum

A handful of Planet Snoopy rides post only a maximum height (54 in / 137 cm), not a minimum, so a small child can ride regardless of size: Joe Cool’s Dodgem School, a scaled-down bumper-car ride where kids drive their own low-speed car; PEANUTS® 500, a kiddie stock-car ride around an oval track; and PEANUTS® Off-Road Rally, a mini off-road-vehicle ride on a circular track.

Beagle Scout Acres isn’t a ride at all, but it’s worth building time around — it’s a shaded Camp Snoopy play space with turfed mounds, climbable tents, and footprint paths, with no height requirement whatsoever.

What Opens Up at 36, 40 and 42 Inches

At 36 in (91 cm), a child unlocks The Great Pumpkin Coaster — Kings Island’s first real roller coaster, a beginner-friendly ride with two turns and small hills and dips that a parent can ride alongside them. The same 36 in (91 cm) line opens Snoopy vs. Red Baron (an outdoor ride where kids pilot miniature fighter planes and control whether their plane dips or climbs), Charlie Brown’s Wind Up (a Peanuts-themed swing ride), Snoopy’s Space Buggies (a bouncing buggy ride through a space theme), Linus’ Beetle Bugs (a classic whip ride), and Sally’s Sea Plane (a spinning plane ride with park views).

At 40 in (102 cm), Snoopy’s Junction — a kid-sized train looping through Planet Snoopy — becomes available on its own, and Woodstock Express, a family-style wooden coaster, drops to 40 in (102 cm) if the child is riding with a companion (its solo minimum is 46 in / 117 cm).

At 42 in (107 cm), the lineup grows with The Bat, a suspended roller coaster whose cars hang and swing from an overhead track through a horseshoe loop and sharp turns; Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare, an interactive dark ride where guests use flashlights to capture ghost notes inside a haunted theater; Woodstock Whirlybirds, a helicopter ride that lifts riders about 25 feet for a view over Planet Snoopy; and Kite Eating Tree, a gentle drop ride themed to Charlie Brown (it drops to 36 in / 91 cm with a companion).

Practical Tips for a Day With Small Kids

Measure your child at home before you go — Kings Island’s official ride pages post exact minimums in inches, and several Planet Snoopy rides (Franklin’s Flyers, Charlie Brown’s Rushing River Log Ride, Scrambler, Snoopy’s Soap Box Racers, Kite Eating Tree) list a lower height that applies only if a companion rides alongside them, so know both numbers going in.

Plan to anchor your day around Planet Snoopy and the Camp Snoopy expansion — it’s the park’s dedicated kids’ area and the most efficient way to string together rides a small child can actually do. If anyone in your group doesn’t meet a ride’s minimum, ask about the Parent Swap Pass at the Help Center near the front gate: one adult rides while the other waits with the kids who can’t, then they trade off, and any child tall enough can ride twice.

Bring sun protection and expect to lean on stroller access — Planet Snoopy’s rides are low to the ground and shaded in spots, but it’s still an outdoor midway, and lines for the newer Camp Snoopy attractions can build quickly on busy days.

Best Rides for Little Kids at Kings Island FAQs

What can a toddler ride at Kings Island?

Toddlers can ride Joe Cool’s Dodgem School, PEANUTS® 500, and PEANUTS® Off-Road Rally, none of which post a height minimum (only a 54 in / 137 cm maximum). Beagle Scout Acres, a Camp Snoopy play space, has no height requirement at all since it isn’t a ride.

How tall does my child have to be for their first roller coaster at Kings Island?

36 inches (91 cm) is the threshold — that’s the minimum for The Great Pumpkin Coaster, a beginner-friendly coaster in Planet Snoopy and the shortest height requirement on any Kings Island roller coaster.

Does Kings Island have a rider swap policy?

Yes, it’s called the Parent Swap Pass. Get one at the Help Center near the front gate; one adult waits with the child who can’t meet a ride’s height requirement while the other rides, then they swap, and any child who does meet the requirement can ride twice.
