Kings Dominion is a Six Flags-operated theme and water park in Doswell, Virginia, known for towering steel coasters like Pantherian and the newer launched wing coaster Rapterra, alongside family-friendly Planet Snoopy and the Soak City water park. Height requirements exist because restraint systems, speeds, and drops on many of these rides are only built to safely secure riders above a specific size, so matching a child to the right ride is as much about safety as it is about avoiding a disappointing walk back from the ride entrance.
This guide organizes the height minimums Kings Dominion publishes for its coasters, family rides, kids’ attractions, and water park slides into tiers, and explains how the park’s ride-alone versus companion policy works. Ride lineups and minimum heights change from season to season as attractions open, close, or get retired, so treat this as a planning starting point and confirm current numbers on the official Kings Dominion / Six Flags website before your visit.

Stats at a Glance

- Tallest Requirement: 54 in (137 cm) — Pantherian, Dominator, Flight of Fear, Delirium
- Ride-Alone Height (most rides): 48 in (122 cm)
- Companion Rule: Guests below a ride’s solo-height minimum may ride with a supervising companion if they meet that ride’s separate, lower companion height
Height Requirements, Tier by Tier
36 inches (91 cm): This is the lowest published minimum at Kings Dominion, and it applies to several Planet Snoopy rides — Great Pumpkin Coaster, Snoopy’s Space Buggies, Snoopy’s Junction, and PEANUTS 500 — all of which let a rider of this height board alone or with a supervising companion. Snoopy vs. Red Baron also starts at 36 inches but adds a maximum of 54 inches (137 cm), since it’s sized for younger kids.
40 inches (102 cm): The Soak City slide Lighthouse Landing sets its minimum here (alone or with a companion), and it’s also the companion-height floor for two rides whose solo minimum is higher: Woodstock Express (46 inches alone) and Reptilian (46 inches alone, with a 78-inch/198 cm maximum). The water slide FreeStylin’ also requires 40 inches, and guests between 40 and 52 inches must wear a life vest on it.
42 inches (107 cm): Zoom Flume and Snoopy’s Rocket Express both set their minimum here. It’s also the companion-height floor for Flying Ace, whose solo-rider minimum is 48 inches.
44 inches (112 cm): This is the companion-height floor for Apple Zapple, the wild mouse coaster, whose solo-rider minimum is 54 inches.
46 inches (117 cm): The solo-rider minimum for Woodstock Express and for Reptilian (which caps out at 78 inches/198 cm maximum); both allow shorter kids down to 40 inches with a supervising companion.
48 inches (122 cm): This is the most common coaster threshold at Kings Dominion, covering Rapterra, Grizzly, Racer 75, Backlot Stunt Coaster, and Twisted Timbers, plus the drop ride Drop Tower (80-inch/203 cm maximum) and the spinning coaster Tumbili (77-inch/196 cm maximum). It’s also the solo-rider height for Arachnidia and Flying Ace, both of which allow companion-supervised riders as short as 36 and 42 inches respectively, and it’s the minimum for the water slides Pipeline Peak and Hurricane Heights.
52 inches (132 cm): WindSeeker, the swinging tower ride, sets its minimum here.
54 inches (137 cm): The park’s tallest published minimums belong to its biggest thrill rides — Pantherian (with a 78-inch/198 cm maximum), Dominator, Flight of Fear, and Delirium — plus the solo-rider height for Apple Zapple. PEANUTS Turnpike runs the opposite direction, capping riders at a 54-inch maximum with no minimum, since it’s built for younger drivers.
No published requirement: Splash Island, a Soak City play area, has no stated minimum or maximum height.
Tips for Families Visiting Kings Dominion
Measure kids at home before you go, in shoes, since that’s how most rides check height at the entrance line. Kings Dominion also has height-measuring stations near the park entrance where kids can get measured before heading in, but each ride’s own line has a measuring stick and staff who verify height again before boarding, so plan around the ride’s number, not just a park-wide estimate. For Soak City, note that some water slides ask riders to be measured barefoot, which can shift a borderline result.
If a child doesn’t meet a ride’s solo-height minimum, check whether that ride offers a lower companion height — many of Kings Dominion’s family coasters and flat rides, like Reptilian, Woodstock Express, Arachnidia, and Flying Ace, let a shorter child ride if a supervising companion rides alongside them. For a first visit with younger kids, Planet Snoopy’s 36-inch rides and Soak City’s Lighthouse Landing are reliable options, while taller kids ready for their first real coaster should look at the 48-inch tier (Racer 75, Grizzly, Backlot Stunt Coaster) before working up to the park’s 54-inch thrill rides.

Kings Dominion Height Requirements FAQs
What is the minimum height to ride at Kings Dominion?
The park’s lowest published height minimum is 36 inches (91 cm), which applies to companion-eligible Planet Snoopy rides such as Great Pumpkin Coaster, Snoopy’s Space Buggies, Snoopy’s Junction, and PEANUTS 500. At the tall end, Pantherian, Dominator, Flight of Fear, and Delirium each require riders to be at least 54 inches (137 cm).
Can kids under 40 inches ride anything at Kings Dominion?
Yes. Kids as short as 36 inches (91 cm) can ride several Planet Snoopy attractions and, with a supervising companion, some rides whose solo-rider minimum is higher, such as Arachnidia (36 inches with a companion, 48 inches alone) and Snoopy vs. Red Baron.
Does Kings Dominion measure height at the gate or at each ride?
Both. Kings Dominion has height-measuring stations near the park entrance where kids can get measured before heading in, and individual ride entrances also post their own height charts and re-check riders before boarding, so eligibility is always confirmed at the ride itself.
