Providence Park sits in Portland, Oregon’s Goose Hollow neighborhood on a site that has hosted organized sports since 1893, when it was known as Multnomah Field. The current stadium structure dates to 1926, making it one of the oldest sports venues still in regular use in the United States, and it has carried several names over the decades, including Multnomah Stadium, Civic Stadium, PGE Park, and Jeld-Wen Field before becoming Providence Park in 2014.

Today the stadium is the shared home of Major League Soccer’s Portland Timbers, owned by Peregrine Sports under Merritt Paulson, and the National Women’s Soccer League’s Portland Thorns FC, owned separately by RAJ Sports (the Bhathal family) since completing its acquisition of the club from Peregrine Sports in January 2024, with the venue itself owned by the City of Portland. Its steep, close-to-the-pitch seating bowl is frequently cited by players and broadcasters as one of the loudest and most atmospheric settings in American soccer.

A Century of Renovations

Providence Park’s long life has come through repeated rebuilding rather than replacement. Major renovations arrived in 1956, 1982, and 2001, each updating the aging structure while preserving its downtown footprint. The most transformative changes came after the Timbers joined MLS in 2011, when a roughly $31 million renovation converted the venue into a dedicated soccer stadium, and again in 2019, when an $85 million privately funded expansion added a multi-level facade and roughly 4,000 seats to the stadium’s east end, pushing capacity to its current 25,218.

More Than a Soccer Venue

Before it belonged to the Timbers and Thorns, the stadium served as home to minor league baseball’s Portland Beavers and hosted the Portland Trail Blazers’ early games, concerts, and civic events. It welcomed the FIFA Women’s World Cup in both 1999 and 2003, and in more recent years has hosted the MLS All-Star Game and MLS Cup, cementing its place as one of the sport’s most storied grounds in the country.
