Oakland Arena opened on November 9, 1966, as the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum Arena, part of the same sports complex that houses the Coliseum stadium. Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, it became one of the Bay Area’s primary venues for sports and live entertainment for more than half a century.
The arena is best known as the longtime home of the Golden State Warriors, who played there from 1971 to 2019 (minus a renovation season in 1996–97). During that run, fans watched three NBA championship celebrations, and the building also earned a reputation as a favorite concert stop, hosting the Grateful Dead more times than any other venue in the band’s history.

Still a Working Venue
Rather than sitting idle, Oakland Arena has continued hosting concerts, family shows, and sporting events. In 2024 it staged Monster Jam and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s touring show, and in February 2025 it was activated for NBA All-Star Weekend festivities, including the celebrity game and All-Star practice sessions. Its decades of history as a top touring stop, especially for the Grateful Dead’s record-setting run of shows, keep it a recognizable name among Bay Area venues.
