InfoCision Stadium–Summa Field is the on-campus football stadium at the University of Akron, built to give the Akron Zips a true home-field advantage after decades of playing miles away from campus. The venue opened on September 12, 2009, with a sold-out crowd watching Akron defeat Morgan State 41-0.

Named for InfoCision Management Corporation, which committed $10 million toward naming rights, and Summa Health System, which sponsored the playing surface, the stadium cost roughly $61.6 million to build. It remains the centerpiece of the university’s athletic facilities and a fixture of Saturday afternoons in downtown Akron.

A Stadium Built Into Campus

Unlike many college stadiums tucked away from the main quad, InfoCision Stadium was designed as part of the University of Akron’s broader campus overhaul, a roughly $300 million construction push known as the ‘New Landscape for Learning.’ The stadium’s press tower rises seven levels and includes office and academic space, tying athletics directly into the university’s everyday footprint.

The move brought Zips football within walking distance of dorms and classrooms for the first time, a deliberate shift meant to boost student attendance and campus energy on game days.

From the Rubber Bowl to InfoCision Stadium

Before 2009, Akron played at the Rubber Bowl, a stadium located several miles from campus that had hosted the team since the 1940s. The distance made it difficult to build a true home atmosphere, which became a driving reason behind the new on-campus facility.

The 2009 opener against Morgan State drew a sellout crowd of 27,881, still recognized as the stadium’s record attendance, and set the tone for InfoCision Stadium as the Zips’ permanent home going forward.
