Bridgeforth Stadium sits on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where it has hosted Dukes football since 1975. Originally opened as Madison Stadium with room for just 5,200 fans, the venue was renamed Bridgeforth Stadium in 1990 in honor of longtime university benefactors, and the playing field itself carries the name Zane Showker Field.
A $62 million renovation completed in 2011 transformed the stadium into its current form, adding an upper deck, club seating, and private suites to push capacity to 24,877. The expansion was engineered so the bowl could one day grow past 40,000 seats, giving JMU room to scale as the Dukes’ Sun Belt Conference profile has risen.

The Hillside Tradition
Long before the stadium carried luxury suites, students and alumni packed onto a grass hillside overlooking the field to watch Dukes football, a tradition that predates most of the stadium’s formal seating and helped cement JMU’s reputation for one of the rowdier student sections in the Sun Belt.
That grassroots energy carried into the modern bowl, where a tight, close-to-the-field layout keeps the crowd noise concentrated over the playing surface even as the official capacity climbed past 24,000.
The 2011 Expansion
Before the renovation, Bridgeforth held under 16,000 fans despite JMU’s growing football ambitions. The 2011 project added a second deck, club-level seating, and 17 private suites, nearly doubling capacity and giving the stadium the amenities expected of a program competing at a higher level.
The upgrade was deliberately built to allow future phases, so additional seating could eventually bring the bowl toward 40,000 if demand warranted it.
