First opened on October 1, 2010, the event transforms the historic ship’s decks, corridors, and adjacent parking areas into a sprawling seasonal scare experience, drawing crowds each fall who come for both the frights and the ship’s genuine maritime history as a backdrop.
The event took a multi-year hiatus after its 2019 season, a gap driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and structural repair work needed on the aging ship, with Shaquille O’Neal’s SHAQtoberfest briefly filling the fall calendar in the interim. Dark Harbor returned in September 2024 under new management by Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group, reviving the brand for a new generation of Southern California haunt-goers.

The Ride Experience
Unlike a traditional theme park, Dark Harbor spreads its scares across the actual decks and passageways of the Queen Mary itself, layering fictional horror onto a ship with a real, storied past. Guests wind through themed mazes such as Voodoo: The Queen’s Curse and Feast: The Final Cut, encounter roaming ‘slider’ street performers, and can duck into secret speakeasies tucked into the ship’s original bars and lounges.
Beyond the mazes, the event has featured circus acts, fire performers, aerial artists, and virtual reality horror add-ons in the surrounding lot, giving the night a festival feel alongside the scares. The mix of maze lineup and side attractions shifts from season to season as the operator refreshes the experience.
History & Legacy
Dark Harbor grew out of an earlier Queen Mary Halloween event called ‘Shipwreck: Halloween Terror Fest’ before rebranding and expanding into its own identity in 2010. It became one of the signature Halloween haunts in the Los Angeles area over the following decade, even spawning a short-lived Orlando sister event, Dark Horizons: Point of No Return, in 2019.
After going dark for several years, the event’s 2024 relaunch under Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group marked a new chapter, with the ship once again dressing up as one of Southern California’s most distinctive haunted attractions each fall.
