Hypersonic XLC was a launched roller coaster that operated at Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia, from March 24, 2001, until its closure on October 28, 2007. Built by S&S Worldwide, it made history as the first roller coaster in the world to use a compressed air launch system, catapulting riders from 0 to 80 mph in just 1.8 seconds.

The ride began life as “Thrust Air 2000,” a prototype tested at S&S Worldwide’s facility in Logan, Utah, before being disassembled, trucked roughly 2,200 miles across the country on more than 60 trucks, and reassembled at Kings Dominion. Despite its groundbreaking technology, the coaster’s short, intense run was plagued by mechanical issues typical of a first-of-its-kind prototype, and it was ultimately removed after the 2007 season.

The Ride Experience

Hypersonic XLC’s signature moment came in its opening seconds: a pneumatic compressed-air launch system blasted the train from a standstill to 80 mph in only 1.8 seconds, subjecting riders to roughly 4.0 G’s of force. That launch fed directly into a near-vertical 90-degree climb, followed immediately by an equally steep 133-foot drop, an intense and disorienting combination unlike anything else on the market at the time. The entire out-and-back layout lasted only about 16 seconds, making it one of the shortest yet most talked-about rides of its era.

With zero inversions, Hypersonic XLC relied entirely on raw acceleration and extreme vertical angles rather than loops or twists to deliver its thrills, a design philosophy that set it apart from the inverting hypercoasters gaining popularity in the early 2000s.

A Prototype’s Legacy

As the very first compressed-air launch coaster ever built, Hypersonic XLC served as a real-world proving ground for S&S Worldwide’s pneumatic technology. The prototype nature of the ride showed in its operations: the high G-forces reportedly wore down tires and stressed track components, leading to a three-month closure in 2002 for modifications and repeated downtime throughout its run.

Kings Dominion ultimately removed Hypersonic XLC after the 2007 season. Its former site later hosted the flat ride El Dorado and, since 2012, the swing ride WindSeeker, though the coaster’s launch technology influenced later S&S air-launch installations at parks worldwide.
