Utilita Arena Birmingham opened on 4 October 1991 as the National Indoor Arena, and at the time it was the largest indoor arena in the United Kingdom. Built on the edge of Birmingham’s Brindleyplace canal district under a £50 million design-and-construct contract awarded to Laing’s Midlands Division, the venue was created to give the Midlands a world-class home for major sporting events, concerts, and entertainment, and it has remained one of the busiest arenas in the country ever since.
The building has changed names several times as sponsorship deals shifted, moving from the National Indoor Arena to Barclaycard Arena in 2014, Arena Birmingham in 2017, and Utilita Arena Birmingham in 2020. A £26 million redevelopment, designed by architecture firm Broadway Malyan and completed in December 2014, modernized the seating, concourses, and technical infrastructure, helping the arena keep pace with newer venues while retaining its central, canalside location in the heart of the city.

Utilita Arena Birmingham was designed as a genuinely multi-purpose space, and its bowl can be reconfigured between a full-capacity concert layout and a smaller, more intimate ‘B1’ setup for around 6,825 guests. That flexibility has made it a regular stop for major touring artists as well as a fixture on the UK darts calendar, having hosted the Premier League Darts event annually since 2007.
