The building itself carries a layered history: constructed in 1889, it still bears signage from its original tenant, the Spring Garden Farmer’s Market, and later served as the Union Transfer Baggage Express Co. from 1918 to 1942, storing goods for railway operations. Before its conversion into a concert hall, the space also housed a tire shop, a trust company, and a Spaghetti Warehouse restaurant, making the venue’s name a direct nod to its baggage-handling past.

A Building with a Past
Union Transfer’s name comes directly from its history: from 1918 to 1942 the building operated as the Union Transfer Baggage Express Co., handling storage for railway passengers. Before that, it bore signage for the Spring Garden Farmer’s Market dating to its 1889 construction, and in later decades it cycled through use as a tire shop, a trust company, and a Spaghetti Warehouse restaurant before promoters converted it into a concert hall in 2011.
That industrial pedigree shows in the room’s high ceilings and open floor plan, which the venue’s operators preserved rather than concealed, giving Union Transfer a distinct architectural character compared to typical black-box concert clubs.
A Home for Indie and Alternative Music
Since opening, Union Transfer has built a reputation as one of Philadelphia’s premier mid-sized rooms, hosting acts across indie rock, alternative, hip-hop, electronic, and folk genres. Performers who have played the venue include Tame Impala, Frank Ocean, Dinosaur Jr., and Cold War Kids.
The venue also has a local touch: it pours beer from Philadelphia’s own Yards Brewing Company, and its coat check is named after Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast, who worked there in the 2010s before her music career took off.
