The Casbah is a small, unpretentious rock club in San Diego, California, founded in 1989 by Tim Mays, Bob Bennett, and Peter English on the site of a former Irish pub at 2812 Kettner Boulevard. With a legal capacity of just 75 in its original room, the club quickly became a proving ground for touring underground acts, most famously hosting Nirvana on August 19, 1990, less than a year before the band’s breakthrough with Nevermind.
By 1994, demand outgrew the original space, and the Casbah relocated a few blocks away to 2501 Kettner Boulevard, where it operates today with a maximum occupancy of more than 200. The new venue added an enclosed patio and a back room with a pool table and full bar, while keeping the scrappy, band-first ethos that built its reputation. Over three decades later, the club still books live music six to seven nights a week.

Owner Tim Mays and his team, who had previously run the now-defunct Pink Panther Club, carried that same DIY approach into the new space, and the venue has since welcomed acts ranging from Dinosaur Jr. and the Breeders to the Cult, Melvins, and the Lumineers.
