The building spent decades as a television studio, serving as the BBC Television Theatre from 1953 to 1991, before entrepreneur Andrew Mahler acquired and renovated it, reopening it as a live music venue in the mid-1990s. Now trading under the sponsorship name O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire and operated by Academy Music Group, it holds around 2,000 people and remains one of London’s best-loved mid-size concert halls, with acts from the Rolling Stones to Amy Winehouse and Mumford & Sons having recorded live shows there.

It operated as a music hall for half a century before the BBC took over the building in 1953, converting it into the BBC Television Theatre and using it for decades of broadcasts before vacating in 1991.
The venue narrowly survived the Second World War when a 1944 flying bomb destroyed the neighboring Shepherd’s Bush Pavilion but left the Empire standing, preserving the Matcham-designed building for its later life as a concert hall.

After the BBC’s departure, the building was renovated and reopened as a live music venue in the 1990s, quickly becoming a favored London stop for touring artists thanks to its ornate interior, sightlines, and mid-size capacity. It now operates under the O2 sponsorship name as part of Academy Music Group’s UK venue network.
