The Santa Barbara Bowl is an outdoor amphitheater carved into a hillside canyon in Santa Barbara, California, built in 1936 as a Depression-era WPA project. It was originally constructed to host the city’s annual Old Spanish Days Fiesta pageant, giving the venue deep roots in local culture long before it became a touring-concert destination.

Today the Bowl is one of the most scenic mid-sized concert venues on the West Coast, drawing touring artists for roughly 27 shows a season between spring and fall. Its natural bowl-shaped terrain, ocean-adjacent setting, and relatively small seating capacity give it a reputation among musicians and fans alike as one of the best places in California to see a live show.

Stats at a Glance

  • Capacity: About 4,500 seats

A Depression-Era Landmark

The Bowl was built into a natural dry creek bed as a Works Progress Administration project during the 1930s, part of a wave of public works construction across California. Its original wooden stage was destroyed by El Niño flooding in 1939 and replaced with a concrete platform that stayed in use for decades afterward.

The venue’s tie to Santa Barbara’s Old Spanish Days Fiesta gave it a built-in local following well before it became a stop on national concert tours, and that civic connection is still part of its identity today.

From Local Pageant Stage to National Touring Stop

A group of community volunteers formed the nonprofit Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation in 1991, and the Foundation took over management of the venue in 1994, kicking off tens of millions of dollars in capital improvements starting the following year, including a rebuilt stage and improved seating, while keeping the historic amphitheater form intact.

Acts booked exclusively through Goldenvoice have included Bob Marley, The Pretenders, Tears for Fears, and Pearl Jam, alongside recent headliners like Katy Perry and Olivia Rodrigo. The venue is especially known among music fans for a September 1979 concert that was later released as Joni Mitchell’s 1980 live album.
