Parc del Fòrum is a sprawling seafront esplanade straddling the Sant Martí district of Barcelona and the neighboring town of Sant Adrià de Besòs. Built in 2004 to host the Universal Forum of Cultures, the roughly 200,000-square-meter (about 49-acre) site was designed by architects Elías Torres and José Antonio Martínez Lapeña, who paired a vast paved plaza with an enormous suspended solar canopy that still generates power for roughly a thousand nearby homes.
What began as a one-off world’s fair ground has become one of Europe’s most important outdoor concert venues. Its flat, concrete expanse and unobstructed sea views make it ideally suited to large-scale festivals, and it has hosted Primavera Sound every year since 2005 (aside from the pandemic-forced pause in 2020-21), alongside other major events like Festival Cruïlla and the Barcelona Beach Festival.

From World’s Fair Site to Festival Ground
Parc del Fòrum was created for the 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures, part of a broader regeneration of Barcelona’s Besòs waterfront that also delivered a new port and convention center. Its centerpiece is a vast paved esplanade anchored by a tilted photovoltaic canopy, one of the largest solar installations of its kind when it was built, which doubles as a shaded landmark visible across the site.
The triangular Forum Building overlooking the plaza, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, now houses Barcelona’s Natural Sciences Museum, giving the park a cultural anchor even outside festival season.
A Home for Primavera Sound and Beyond
Primavera Sound relocated to Parc del Fòrum in 2005 after outgrowing its original home at Poble Espanyol, drawn by a much larger site with direct Mediterranean views. Attendance grew from under 47,000 in its first year at the park to well over 250,000 across recent single-week editions, with the festival’s contract securing the venue through at least 2030.
Beyond Primavera Sound, the open layout and multiple stage areas let the park pivot easily between festivals like Festival Cruïlla and Barcelona Beach Festival, large sporting events, and civic gatherings, making it one of the city’s most flexible large-capacity venues.
