First Direct Arena is a 13,781-capacity indoor arena in the Arena Quarter of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Designed by architecture firm Populous and built at a cost of around £60 million, it opened with a concert by Bruce Springsteen on 24 July 2013 and was officially inaugurated on 4 September 2013.
The venue was the first in the United Kingdom to use a fan-shaped seating orientation, a layout intended to bring every seat closer to the stage than in traditionally rectangular arenas. It was named ‘best new venue in the world’ at the 2014 Stadium Business Awards and has since hosted a steady lineup of major touring acts, comedy shows, and sporting events.

A Design Built Around Sightlines
First Direct Arena’s fan-shaped bowl was a deliberate departure from the rectangular arenas common across the UK at the time. The layout combines a flat floor with roughly 15 rows of retractable seating, and its longest stage-to-seat distance is around 68 metres, noticeably shorter than the 95 to 110 metres typical of conventional arena designs. That compact geometry was central to the venue winning ‘best new venue in the world’ from the Stadium Business Awards in 2014.
A Home for Major Tours
Since Bruce Springsteen opened the venue in 2013, First Direct Arena has hosted a wide range of headline acts, including Elton John, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Ed Sheeran, alongside comedy performances and sporting events. It is operated by Legends Global, which also runs the AO Arena in Manchester and Utilita Arena in Newcastle, and remains one of Yorkshire’s principal large-scale entertainment venues, drawing touring productions that might otherwise bypass the region.
