Berghain is a techno nightclub in Berlin, Germany, housed inside a former Communist-era heat and power plant near the Berlin Ostbahnhof. Opened in late 2004 by promoters Norbert Thormann and Michael Teufele, it grew out of their earlier fetish party series Snax and the club Ostgut, which had operated in a former railway depot until its closure in 2003.
Set inside a massive power station built in the Stalinallee development era, Berghain became known worldwide for its cavernous main hall, punishing sound system, and famously unpredictable door policy. In 2016 a German court formally recognized the club as a cultural institution, placing it in the same tax category as concert halls and theaters rather than ordinary entertainment venues.

From Fetish Parties to Techno Landmark
Berghain’s lineage traces back to 1994, when Thormann and Teufele began hosting the gay fetish party series Snax in a former railway bunker. That project evolved into the club Ostgut in 1998, set in a disused freight depot near the Spree river, which quickly built a reputation as one of Berlin’s most intense techno spaces before closing in January 2003. The same founders then converted a former East German power station on the other side of the Ostbahnhof tracks, opening the house-focused Panorama Bar there on October 15, 2004, with the club’s main techno hall opening roughly a month later under the name Berghain.
The Building and the Sound
The venue occupies a former Friedrichshain combined heat and power plant, a hulking structure with a main hall ceiling rising about 18 meters. Its industrial architecture of exposed steel and concrete is paired with a Funktion-One sound system that has become central to the club’s reputation among touring DJs and dedicated dancers alike.
