The Zoo Experience
Visitors move through themed zones like Gorilla Forest, winner of a 2003 AZA Exhibit Award, and Glacier Run, a cold-climate habitat for polar bears and seals that opened in 2012 and drove one of the zoo’s earlier attendance records. The HerpAquarium, Islands, Wallaroo Walkabout, Cats of the Americas, and South America exhibits round out the zoo’s eight major areas, giving guests a broad tour of global wildlife within a single park.
The zoo has also built a reputation for notable animal residents, including King Louie, a roughly 9.5-foot albino American alligator, and Amber, an orangutan whose playful interactions with visitors gained wide attention on social media. In 2025, the zoo welcomed new orangutans and gorillas along with births of Amur tiger cubs, a colobus monkey, and a giraffe.
Conservation and Community Role
As Kentucky’s officially designated state zoo, the Louisville Zoo operates as a nonprofit under the mission to ‘Better the Bond Between People and Our Planet,’ combining animal care, visitor education, and conservation programs. Its breeding successes include being the first zoo to hatch the rare white-throated ground-dove in captivity in 2006.
The zoo’s record-breaking 2026 fiscal year, with 945,225 visitors, was credited by city leaders to expanded community access programs like the Community Access Pass and free Morning Walking Club, along with a steady lineup of new animal arrivals and special events such as La Fiesta and Wild Lights.
