The park was announced in January 2000 as part of a roughly $40 million expansion of the Six Flags Great Adventure Resort, opening to the public just a few months later that May. Since opening, Hurricane Harbor has periodically added new attractions, including the King Cobra ride, which finished third for ‘Best New Ride (Waterpark)’ at Amusement Today’s 2012 Golden Ticket Awards. In USA Today’s 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards, the park ranked ninth among the nation’s best outdoor water parks, and it drew roughly 464,000 visitors in 2024.
