The Drop
Insano is a pure speed slide: riders lie back, cross their ankles, and drop down a roughly 70-degree face into a long flat run-out that ends in a 1.70-metre-deep pool. The whole descent lasts only a few seconds — the park’s famous pitch is 0 to 100 km/h in five. Minimum rider height is 1.40 m and the weight limit is 120 kg, and like every slide of this type, the view from the wooden launch tower is half the thrill.
1997, Not 1989
Insano opened in December 1997 — a date many listicles get wrong. The often-repeated “1989” is actually the year Beach Park opened its water park; the giant slide came eight years later. From its debut Insano was celebrated as the tallest water slide in the world — a title it held until 1999, when Caribe Bay’s 42-metre Captain Spacemaker in Italy edged half a metre higher. It has remained Latin America’s most famous slide ever since.
Beach Park
Beach Park grew from a beachfront restaurant founded in 1985 into Latin America’s best-known water park, drawing around 1.7 million visitors a year to its Aqua Park, resorts and beachfront on Porto das Dunas. Insano remains its icon, and nearly three decades on it still sits comfortably among the tallest water slides in the world — a few spots behind newer record-chasers, but ahead of almost every slide built in the 20th century.
