If you are wondering what your toddler or preschooler can actually do at Universal Studios Hollywood, the honest answer is that it is a thrill-and-show park with a small but charming pocket for little ones. Most of the big-name rides start at 40 in (102 cm) or 48 in (122 cm), so heights matter more here than at a typical kids-first park.

This guide is organised by what your child can do, starting with attractions that list no height minimum and then moving up through 34 in (86 cm), 39 in (99 cm), 40 in (102 cm) and 42 in (107 cm). It is based on the park’s own Guide for Safety and Accessibility (effective Oct. 4, 2025) and Universal’s own attraction pages. Heights can change, so check the official Universal Studios Hollywood website for the definitive current list before you go.

Stats at a Glance

  • Kids’ Area: Super Silly Fun Land (Despicable Me-themed playground with dry and wet play areas)
  • First Roller Coaster At: 39 in (99 cm) — Flight of the Hippogriff
  • Companion Rule: Children who meet a ride’s minimum but are under 48 in (122 cm) must ride with a Supervising Companion aged 14 or older
  • Rider Swap: Yes — Universal calls it Child Switch; ask a Team Member at the ride entrance

Rides With No Height Minimum

Super Silly Fun Land is the best first stop for small kids. The park describes it as an outdoor, Despicable Me-themed playground with dry and wet play areas. Shoes must be worn at all times, the dry zone is for guests under 48 in (122 cm), and adults must be accompanied by a child. Anyone in the wet play area will get significantly wet, so bring a change of clothes.

Silly Swirly Fun Ride sits inside Super Silly Fun Land. It is a gentle circular-motion ride with controls for moving the vehicle up and down. The park’s guide lists no minimum height, and 48 in (122 cm) is the height marker for the supervising-companion rule.

Dino Play for Kids is an outdoor, Jurassic period-themed playground, listed in the park’s guide with no height requirement.

DreamWorks Theatre Featuring Kung Fu Panda is an active movie experience in a theatre-style seat with sudden tilting, shaking and jarring movements. The guide lists no height minimum. Children must be able to sit upright and stay in their seat, so it suits calmer preschoolers better than very sensitive toddlers.

Studio Tour is a tram ride of about 45-60 minutes through the Backlot with no height minimum listed. The guide notes that some attractions on the tour include sudden tilting, shaking and jarring, that riders will get wet, and that parental discretion is recommended due to mature themes. WaterWorld is a live stunt show with loud explosion noises, flame effects and pyrotechnics. Guests in the green “Soak Zone” seating get significantly wet, and parental discretion is recommended. Both are worth a preview before you bring a noise-sensitive child.

What Opens Up at 34, 39, 40 and 42 Inches

There is no 36 in (91 cm) step at this park. The first height-restricted ride opens lower, at 34 in (86 cm): The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash. It is a ride that moves through a building along a track with slow turning and spinning, and a moving walkway is used for boarding. Children from 34 in (86 cm) up to 48 in (122 cm) need a Supervising Companion. It is the gentlest ride in the park with a height rule, so it is a good first “real” ride.

At 39 in (99 cm), Flight of the Hippogriff is the park’s first roller coaster. The guide calls it a high-speed roller coaster ride with sudden and dramatic accelerations, climbs, tilts and drops. Universal’s own attraction guide calls it a family-friendly coaster and lists it as 39 in (99 cm) to ride with an adult and 48 in (122 cm) to ride alone. It is in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Note that this height falls between the usual 36 in and 40 in steps, so a child who is just under 40 in (102 cm) can still ride.

At 40 in (102 cm) you unlock several bigger rides. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge in Super Nintendo World moves along a track with sudden accelerations, turning and spinning, plus augmented reality simulations of a high-speed race. It is probably the most appealing of the group for kids who know Mario. Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is a simulation ride with sudden tilting, shaking and jarring actions that plays out as a high-speed chase. The Simpsons Ride is a simulation ride with sudden tilting, shaking and jarring, and simulated high-speed chases, extreme heights and drops. TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D moves through a building along a track with tilting, shaking and jarring, and 3-D simulations of a high-speed chase. The park recommends parental discretion for its mature themes, so it is the one to think about most for young children. For all four, children from 40 in (102 cm) up to 48 in (122 cm) need a Supervising Companion.

At 42 in (107 cm), Jurassic World – The Ride opens up. It is a ride that moves along a water track with sudden accelerations, steep inclines and drops from extreme heights, and riders will get significantly wet. Children from 42 in (107 cm) up to 48 in (122 cm) need a Supervising Companion.

Two of the park’s headline rides are still out of reach for most small children. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride both list 48 in (122 cm) in the guide, so they are not part of a little-kid plan.

Practical Tips for a Day With Small Kids

Measure your child at home in shoes off, then again at the park. Heights are checked at the ride entrance, and the difference between 39 in (99 cm) and 40 in (102 cm) or 42 in (107 cm) decides whether a ride is on or off your list. Some rides also use restraints that may not fit every body shape, and the park encourages guests to try the test seat at the entrance of Flight of the Hippogriff, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, Revenge of the Mummy and The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash.

The park’s supervising-companion rule, in its own words: “Any child who meets the minimum height requirement of an attraction but does not meet the 48-inch ride-alone height requirement must be accompanied by a Supervising Companion.” It defines that companion as “someone who is 14 years of age or older, meets all other attraction ridership requirements, and can assist a child under 48″ (122cm) in height in complying with rider instructions. At all of our attractions, children under 48″ must be able to sit upright unassisted.” The companion rule does not lower any ride’s minimum height.

If you have a child who is too small for a ride, ask a Team Member at the entrance about Child Switch, which lets adults take turns riding while one stays with the child. Universal’s own attraction guide lists Child Switch as available upon request for Flight of the Hippogriff. Confirm the procedure ride by ride, because it can differ.

For a break, the park’s Family Center offers quiet rooms with sensory toys and therapy blankets, private lockable nursing rooms with a chair and sink, and family restrooms. Single-user family restrooms are also next to Super Silly Fun Land. Wheelchairs and stroller rental are available at a facility just inside the main entrance. The Studio Tour and The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash accommodate stroller-wheelchairs under the conditions in the guide, so ask a Team Member about where to leave a stroller at other rides.

Be honest with yourself about the park: it is stronger for ages 5 and up than for toddlers. For toddlers the highlights are Super Silly Fun Land, Silly Swirly Fun Ride, Dino Play for Kids, and the shows. Ride heights, rules and closures change, and some attractions close for refurbishment, so check the official Universal Studios Hollywood website for the definitive current list.
