TusenFryd is Norway’s largest amusement park, located in Vinterbro, about 20 kilometers south of Oslo. It opened on June 11, 1988, on the grounds of a former zoo, and drew nearly 500,000 visitors in its very first season. Today the park is owned by Spanish leisure company Parques Reunidos and operates seasonally from spring through October.
The park’s roster of rides spans more than three decades of additions, from the original Loopen coaster built by Vekoma in 1988 to Storm – The Dragon Legend, a Gerstlauer inverted infinity coaster added in 2023. Its two headline thrill rides are Speed Monster, an Intamin Accelerator Coaster with a hydraulic launch, and Thundercoaster, Norway’s only wooden roller coaster.

The Ride Experience
Speed Monster, which opened in 2006, is the park’s most intense ride: a hydraulic launch fires trains from 0 to 90 km/h (56 mph) in about 2.2 seconds, sending riders through a Norwegian Loop and corkscrew across roughly 700 meters of track with three inversions.
Thundercoaster, which opened in 2001, is built by Vekoma and holds the distinction of being Norway’s only wooden roller coaster. It drops 32 meters at a 57.3-degree angle and reaches about 93 km/h across 950 meters of track, running Timberliner trains since a 2015 refit.
Park History and Growth
TusenFryd was built on land that had previously housed a zoo from 1950 to 1985, and construction of the new amusement park took about 18 months. Since its 1988 opening it has steadily added attractions, including the SuperSplash water coaster from MACK Rides in 2003, the Ragnarok rapids ride in 2016, and the Zamperla spinning coaster HuriHuri in 2022.
In 2008 the park was acquired by Parques Reunidos, the Madrid-based operator that runs dozens of parks worldwide. TusenFryd today counts more than 30 attractions and remains the largest amusement park in Norway.
