Efteling is a fairytale-themed amusement park in Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands, that grew out of a small nature park into one of Europe’s most-visited theme parks. It opened its storybook heart, the Fairytale Forest, in 1952, built on illustrations by Dutch artist Anton Pieck and brought to life with animatronic scenes drawn from folklore and children’s tales.
Owned by the nonprofit Efteling Nature Park Foundation and operated as Efteling B.V., the park now covers about 72 hectares and welcomed roughly 5.6 million visitors in 2024, ranking third in Europe behind Disneyland Paris and Europa-Park according to the TEA/AECOM attendance report.

From Fairytale Forest to Modern Theme Park
Efteling began as a small nature park founded in 1950 by local figures including Peter Reijnders, with illustrator Anton Pieck designing the storybook facades and scenes that filled the Fairytale Forest when it opened to the public in 1952. That whimsical, hand-crafted aesthetic became the park’s defining identity as it expanded steadily over the following decades.
Rather than chasing pure thrill spectacle, Efteling built its reputation on immersive storytelling, detailed theming, and Dutch craftsmanship, adding themed lands, dark rides, and eventually roller coasters while preserving the wooded, fairytale atmosphere of its original attraction.
Rides and Attractions
The park operates six roller coasters, including Baron 1898, a Bolliger & Mabillard dive coaster themed around a mine disaster that opened in 2015, and Joris en de Draak, a Great Coasters International dueling wooden coaster that opened in 2010. Its dark rides remain a major draw, led by Symbolica, a trackless dark ride that opened in 2017, alongside De Vliegende Hollander, a water coaster and dark ride built by KumbaK that opened in 2007.
Beyond the rides, Efteling is known for Aquanura, a large-scale musical fountain show, and its extensive Fairytale Forest, which continues to anchor the park’s identity as a family-oriented, story-driven destination rather than a purely thrill-focused park.
