Disneyland Resort packs its biggest thrills into a handful of attractions with posted height minimums, and knowing those numbers before you arrive saves a lot of tears at the ride entrance. Most of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure — including classics like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and it’s a small world — welcome guests of any height, but the coasters, drop rides, and Star Wars attractions all have specific rules.
This guide walks through the rides families ask about most, organized by height tier in both inches and centimeters, along with Disneyland’s age-based supervision rules and Rider Switch option. Ride lineups, overlays, and minimums can change seasonally, so treat this as a planning starting point and confirm current requirements on the official Disneyland Resort website before your visit.

Stats at a Glance
- Shortest Requirement: 32 in (81 cm) — Autopia (with companion), Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters, Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree
- Tallest Requirement: 54 in (137 cm) — Autopia, to drive alone
- Under-7 Companion Rule: Children under age 7 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older to board any attraction
- Companion Rule: Most rides use one height minimum for everyone; Autopia and Silly Symphony Swings allow a lower height with a supervising companion; separately, under-7s need a 14+ companion on every ride and under-14s need a 14+ companion to enter the park at all
Height Requirements, Tier by Tier
32 inches (81 cm): The lowest tier at Disneyland Resort includes Autopia in Disneyland Park, where a guest as short as 32 inches (81 cm) can ride alongside a supervising companion who is at least 54 inches (137 cm) tall. Over in Disney California Adventure, Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree — both in Cars Land — use the same 32-inch (81 cm) minimum for any rider.
35–38 inches (89–97 cm): Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster, Disneyland Park’s junior coaster in Mickey’s Toontown, requires 35 inches (89 cm). Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge steps up to 38 inches (97 cm).
40 inches (102 cm): This is the most common threshold at the resort. In Disneyland Park it covers Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. In Disney California Adventure it covers Radiator Springs Racers, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, Soarin’ Around the World, and Jumpin’ Jellyfish. Silly Symphony Swings also sits in this tier as its companion minimum: riders between 40 and 48 inches (102–122 cm) must share a tandem swing with a responsible person.
42 inches (107 cm): Matterhorn Bobsleds in Disneyland Park, plus Grizzly River Run and Goofy’s Sky School in Disney California Adventure, all require 42 inches (107 cm).
46 inches (117 cm) and up: Indiana Jones Adventure in Disneyland Park requires 46 inches (117 cm) — the tallest single minimum in that park. In Disney California Adventure, the Incredicoaster requires 48 inches (122 cm), matching the solo-rider threshold for Silly Symphony Swings. The tallest published number at the resort belongs to Autopia, where drivers must be 54 inches (137 cm) tall to pilot a car without a supervising companion.
No height requirement: Fantasyland dark rides, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, it’s a small world, and most other attractions across both parks have no minimum height and welcome riders of any size — though the under-7 companion rule below still applies to them.
Tips for Families Visiting Disneyland
Height and age are two separate rules at Disneyland, and both matter. Cast Members measure guests with a fixed stick at each individual ride entrance rather than issuing one park-wide pass — Disneyland does not use a resort-wide height wristband, so plan on a child being checked at every qualifying attraction they approach. Separately, Disneyland’s official policy states that children under age 7 must be accompanied by a person age 14 or older to board any attraction, and guests under age 14 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older just to enter a theme park — neither of these age rules is tied to how tall the child is. If a child doesn’t meet a ride’s height minimum, Disneyland’s Rider Switch program lets adults trade off riding while one stays with the child, without everyone waiting in line twice; ask any Cast Member at the ride entrance to set it up. For height planning, pair a 40-inch (102 cm) child with Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Radiator Springs Racers; save Indiana Jones Adventure and the Incredicoaster for once they clear 46–48 inches (117–122 cm).

Disneyland Height Requirements FAQs
What is the minimum height to ride at Disneyland?
The lowest posted minimum is 32 inches (81 cm), required for Autopia in Disneyland Park (with a supervising companion at least 54 inches/137 cm tall) and for Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree in Disney California Adventure.
Can kids under 40 inches ride anything at Disneyland?
Yes. Most of both parks has no height requirement at all, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, it’s a small world, and the Fantasyland dark rides. Younger kids can also ride Autopia, Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters, and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, all of which require less than 40 inches (102 cm). Note that children under 7 still need a companion age 14 or older on any attraction, regardless of height.
Does Disneyland measure height at the gate or at each ride?
Disneyland measures guests at each individual attraction’s entrance, not at the park gate, and there is no resort-wide wristband that lets a borderline-height guest skip remeasurement — expect a Cast Member to check height at every ride with a posted minimum. This is separate from Disneyland’s age policy, which requires children under 7 to have a companion 14 or older on every attraction and guests under 14 to have a companion 14 or older to enter the park.
