A Euro 2004 Showpiece
Estádio José Alvalade was purpose-built for UEFA Euro 2004, one of ten venues used across Portugal for the tournament. It hosted five matches at the championship, including a semi-final, showcasing its modern bowl design and acoustics to a continental audience just months after opening.
The following year, the stadium staged the 2005 UEFA Cup Final, where Sporting played as the home side but lost 3-1 to CSKA Moscow of Russia, a bittersweet moment for a ground built to be the club’s cathedral of modern football.
Renovation and Growth
In 2024, Sporting CP unveiled a ten-year development plan for the Alvalade complex, and by the 2025–26 season the club had removed the stadium’s perimeter moat to bring fans closer to the pitch and add new lower-bowl seating. The work pushed official capacity from just over 50,000 toward roughly 52,000, with further expansion planned in stages around the stadium’s west, north, east, and south stands.
