A Stadium Built for the Games
Commonwealth Stadium was constructed specifically to host the 1978 Commonwealth Games, staging the athletics competitions along with the opening and closing ceremonies. Home of the Elks and More
The Edmonton Elks have called Commonwealth Stadium home since it opened, and the venue has hosted five Grey Cup championship games, most recently in 2018. Beyond football, the stadium has staged multiple FIFA youth and women’s tournaments, including matches during the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In 2003, the stadium made hockey history by hosting the NHL’s first outdoor regular-season game, the Heritage Classic between the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens. It has also drawn massive crowds for concerts, with U2’s 2011 show setting the venue’s attendance record.
