From Grant Field to Bobby Dodd Stadium
The stadium opened in 1913 as Grant Field, named for donor Hugh Inman Grant, and quickly became the site of one of college football’s most lopsided results: Georgia Tech’s 222-0 win over Cumberland College in 1916. In 1988 the venue was renamed Bobby Dodd Stadium in honor of the coach who led the Yellow Jackets for 22 seasons and built the program’s national reputation.
The stadium’s attendance record dates to 1973, when 60,316 fans packed in for a game against rival Georgia, well above today’s seated capacity after recent renovations trimmed the north end for new athletic facilities.
