Allegacy Financial Stadium has served as the home of Wake Forest Demon Deacons football since it opened in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in September 1968. Built for around $4 million, the venue has carried several names over the decades, starting out as Groves Stadium before becoming BB&T Field, then Truist Field, then Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium in 2023, and most recently Allegacy Financial Stadium following Allegacy’s 2026 corporate rebrand.
Despite multiple renovations over the years, including a new FieldTurf playing surface installed in 2006 and the addition of the Deacon Tower press box before the 2008 season, the stadium has stayed intimate by college football standards. With a capacity of 31,500, it’s recognized as the smallest football stadium by permanent capacity in both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the entire Power Four, giving Demon Deacons games a notably close-knit, loud atmosphere.

A Name That Has Changed With the Times
The stadium’s identity has shifted repeatedly even as its address and purpose stayed the same. It opened as Groves Stadium in 1968, honoring Wake Forest benefactor J. Edwin Groves, and kept that name for nearly four decades. Naming rights deals brought it to BB&T Field in 2007, then Truist Field at Wake Forest in 2020 following BB&T’s merger with SunTrust, then Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium in June 2023 under a long-term partnership with the credit union, and most recently Allegacy Financial Stadium after Allegacy rebranded itself in 2026.
Through each renaming, the bones of the stadium have been steadily upgraded. Major renovation work took place in 1996, from 2005 to 2008, and again in 2011, modernizing seating, adding the Deacon Tower press box, and replacing the original grass field with FieldTurf.
Game Days and Beyond
On fall Saturdays, the stadium’s compact size works in its favor, keeping fans close to the action for Demon Deacons football. The record crowd of 37,623 packed in on November 13, 2004, well above the venue’s listed capacity, a testament to how much energy the small bowl can hold when rivalry games draw a big audience.
The stadium has also hosted events beyond college football, including concerts from major touring acts such as Guns N’ Roses in 2017, Billy Joel in 2018, and Paul McCartney in 2022, putting Winston-Salem on the map for large-scale live entertainment as well as athletics.
