Wild Lights is the Detroit Zoo’s annual holiday light display, running select nights from November 21, 2026 through January 3, 2027 at the zoo’s Royal Oak campus. Gates open at 5 p.m. each night, with closing time stretching to 10:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 9 p.m. on all other nights, including the final January dates. New for 2026 is The Igloo, an exclusive 21-and-up heated lounge with fire pits, strolling apps, adult hot chocolate and live music on Friday and Saturday nights, plus a newly illuminated stretch of the Fred & Barbara Erb Discovery Trails.
Wild Lights suits families with young kids as much as couples looking for a low-key date night, and most visits run two to three hours depending on how long you linger at the carousel, the VR experience and the photo-worthy light displays. Tickets are sold through the zoo’s webstore for a specific date and a specific entry time, so buy online in advance, since online prices run below gate prices, popular dates and time slots can sell out, and walk-up availability at the gate is not guaranteed.

What’s new for 2026
The headline addition is The Igloo, an exclusive 21-and-up lounge with outdoor fire pits, strolling apps, adult hot chocolate and live music every Friday and Saturday night. The zoo has also illuminated the eastern portion of the Fred & Barbara Erb Discovery Trails for the first time, adding a giant Light Bright wall, glowing swings and a light-up teeter-totter to that part of the route. Other debuts include the Color, Fly, Butterfly art exhibition at the Ford Education Center, where guests color and then digitally animate their own butterfly, a Wild Explorer VR experience screening holiday-themed adventures, and a new souvenir hot cocoa cup shaped like a giant holiday light bulb.
The lights and displays
Wild Lights fills the zoo’s pathways with illuminated animal sculptures, wrapped trees and themed light zones across the grounds, building on the Enchanted Rainforest and synchronized Field of Lights that have anchored recent seasons. Live music and choir performances happen throughout the run, and the zoo’s 4D theater and historic carousel, with 33 hand-painted animals, stay open as part of the nighttime experience.
Tickets, prices and member nights
General admission runs $17 to $25 online depending on the date and time slot chosen, with members paying 10% less at $15.30 to $22.50. Tickets bought at the gate cost more: $27 general and $24 for members. The Total Experience Package is $60 ($54 for members) and bundles admission with a carousel ride, VR access, 4D theater screening, a souvenir cocoa cup and a food voucher. There are no dedicated member-only or free admission nights; the zoo’s main perk for members is the 10% discount plus free parking. Parking otherwise costs $8 per vehicle. Since entry is booked for a specific date and time at checkout, the zoo advises buying online in advance, as the slot you want can sell out and gate prices are always higher.

Food, drinks and extras
Food and drink stands operate throughout the zoo during Wild Lights nights, including the new souvenir hot cocoa cup shaped like a light bulb. The Igloo lounge adds adult hot chocolate and a 21-and-up setting with fire pits for anyone wanting a break from the family crowds. The carousel runs as a $3 add-on ride (included free in the Total Experience Package), and the Wild Explorer VR screenings and 4D theater showings are available as additional experiences, also bundled into the package.
Tips for your visit
Weeknights tend to be quieter than the Friday and Saturday nights that run later and draw bigger crowds, so book an early entry slot on busier nights to beat lines at the gate and parking lot. Plan for two to three hours to see the main light zones, ride the carousel and warm up with cocoa. Michigan winter nights get cold fast, so dress in layers and expect the walk between light zones to be outdoors the whole time. Buy tickets online ahead of your visit and lock in the date and time you want, since online prices are lower than at the gate and popular slots can sell out.

Soak, snap and drape. A cooling towel takes the edge off a 45-minute midday queue in July.
Park apps, mobile ordering and photos kill a battery by 3 p.m. This one snaps on magnetically, so there's no cable to snag on a restraint.
Ride with your glasses on and keep them. Many parks allow glasses on rides if they're strapped, so check the ride rules first.
