The Rose Parade has opened New Year’s Day in Pasadena, California, since 1890, when members of the Valley Hunt Club staged a procession of flower-decked carriages to show off the region’s mild winter climate. The event quickly outgrew its country-club origins, and by 1895 the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association had formed to organize it as an annual civic tradition.

Today the parade travels roughly 5.5 miles down Colorado Boulevard, led by dozens of elaborate floats covered entirely in flowers, seeds, and other natural materials, alongside marching bands and equestrian units from across the country. It routinely draws several hundred thousand spectators in person and a national television audience, making it one of the longest-running and most-watched New Year’s traditions in the United States.

A Tradition Rooted in Roses

The parade began as a Valley Hunt Club showcase of Southern California’s winter sunshine, with horse-drawn carriages decorated in orange blossoms and flowers. Motorized floats gradually replaced horse-drawn ones through the 1910s and 1920s as the event grew in scale and ambition.

The parade has been canceled only four times in its history: in 1942, 1943, and 1945 amid World War II, and again in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making it one of the most consistently held public events in the country.

Floats, Bands, and the Rose Queen

Each float is built on a frame covered entirely in natural materials, from rose petals to seeds and bark, with volunteers contributing thousands of hours to cover every surface by hand before judging and the parade route.

A Rose Queen and her Royal Court of princesses, selected from local high schools, traditionally ride at the head of the parade, while marching bands from across North America and beyond compete for a spot in the lineup each year.
