Halloween Horror Nights is the separately ticketed, after-dark haunt event held each fall at Universal Orlando Resort, transforming Universal Studios Florida into a gauntlet of haunted houses, scare zones, and horror-themed shows. It began in 1991 as a three-night event called “Universal Studios Fright Nights” featuring a single haunted house, and was rebranded Halloween Horror Nights the following year as it grew into an annual tradition.
Over more than three decades, Halloween Horror Nights has grown into one of the most elaborate Halloween events in the theme park industry, spawning sister editions at Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Singapore, and Universal Studios Japan. The Orlando event, the longest-running and largest of the group, returns for its 35th year in 2026 with a lineup of ten haunted houses built around original icons Jack the Clown and Dr. Oddfellow, longtime rivals who call an uneasy truce to share the marquee as co-ringmasters.

A Three-Decade Legacy
Halloween Horror Nights has run nearly every year since its 1991 debut, with the notable exception of 2020, when the Orlando event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event has also shifted locations within the resort over the years, running at Islands of Adventure from 2002 to 2005 before settling permanently at Universal Studios Florida in 2006.
The Hollywood counterpart launched in 1997 and has since developed its own identity, most notably the Terror Tram, a haunted tram ride through the studio backlot that isn’t offered at the Orlando event. Singapore and Japan followed in 2011 and 2012, extending the brand into Universal’s international parks.
Houses, Scare Zones, and Icons
Each year’s event centers on original haunted houses alongside attractions based on licensed horror properties, filled out by roaming scare zones and live shows spread across the park. For its 35th anniversary in 2026, Orlando’s “Infernal Carnival of Nightmares” theme brings back longtime rivals Jack the Clown and Dr. Oddfellow as co-ringmasters for the first time, with their own house exploring the decades-old feud between Jack’s chaos and Oddfellow’s control, alongside a ten-house lineup that includes properties like Stranger Things, Hellraiser, and Sinners.
Universal Studios Hollywood runs its own concurrent 2026 event from September 3 through November 1, featuring eight haunted houses, scare zones, and the exclusive Terror Tram experience.
