Built by Dutch manufacturer Vekoma and designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, the coaster is a near-twin of the original Tron Lightcycle Power Run that debuted at Shanghai Disneyland in 2016, adapted to fit its new home behind Space Mountain. The Ride Experience
Guests queue through an illuminated, futuristic corridor before boarding two-seat motorbike-style vehicles arranged in a single row, a seating style unique among Disney coasters. After a swift launch out of the station, the ride weaves through tight turns both outdoors and inside a canopy-covered section designed to evoke the digital grid world of the Tron films, with synchronized lighting and sound effects amplifying the sense of speed.
The layout is relatively short at just over 3,100 feet, with the ride lasting about one minute, but its rapid acceleration and low-to-the-ground vehicle design make it feel considerably faster and more intense than its modest height of 78 feet might suggest.
Design and Theming
Tron Lightcycle/Run was adapted from the original Tron Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland, which opened in 2016 as part of the Tomorrowland expansion there. The Magic Kingdom version required years of construction behind Space Mountain and was originally announced in 2017, with its opening delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic before finally debuting in 2023 to coincide with Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
The attraction’s enclosed canopy structure, illuminated with dynamic LED lighting, was engineered to house guests waiting in the queue as well as portions of the track, allowing Imagineers to create an immersive nighttime-grid atmosphere regardless of the time of day outside.
