Seven Dwarfs Mine Train opened on May 28, 2014, as the centerpiece of the New Fantasyland expansion at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Built by Dutch manufacturer Vekoma in partnership with Walt Disney Imagineering, the steel family coaster introduced a custom “tilting vehicle” system in which each mine cart rocks side to side over uneven track, mimicking the unsteady rumble of a runaway mining cart rather than the fixed, rigid ride feel of a typical coaster train.
The attraction is themed around Disney’s 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, guiding riders through the diamond mine before winding into a show building filled with animatronic dwarfs whistling while they work. A near-identical version later opened at Shanghai Disneyland in June 2016, making this one of Disney’s most successfully exported coaster designs of the modern era.

The Ride Experience
Riders board rustic mine cars that climb two separate chain lifts before rocking through banked turns engineered to sway the vehicles independently of the track, a first-of-its-kind system for a Disney attraction. After the outdoor mining-camp scenery, trains dip into an indoor show building where Doc, Grumpy, and the rest of the dwarfs appear as animatronics amid glittering gemstone props, before a final outdoor descent past Snow White’s cottage returns the train to the station.
At roughly 34 mph with no inversions, the coaster is intentionally mild, positioning it as a bridge attraction for families with younger riders who have outgrown the park’s toddler-level rides but aren’t ready for faster steel coasters elsewhere in Walt Disney World.
Design and Legacy
The mine train replaced the Snow White’s Scary Adventures dark ride and reused several of that attraction’s original Audio-Animatronic dwarf figures, refurbished and reprogrammed for the new show scenes. Disney Imagineers worked directly with Vekoma to develop the tilting-cart mechanism specifically for this ride, and the technology has since become closely associated with Disney’s approach to family coasters.
Its popularity led Disney to build a nearly identical version at Shanghai Disneyland, which opened in 2016, cementing Seven Dwarfs Mine Train as a repeatable template for family-friendly coaster design across the company’s global parks.
