The Ride Experience
Riders board 16-passenger trains inside a queue themed to an archaeological dig gone wrong, then wind through catacombs before the ride’s first LIM launch propels the train into darkness. The layout uses a series of switch tracks, a turntable, and an 80-degree banked turn to disguise the coaster’s compact indoor footprint, so guests rarely know which direction they’ll be launched next.
The signature moment comes when the train appears to stall, then is suddenly launched backward at full speed before a final forward blast sends it past swarming scarab beetle projections and a wall of fire toward a steep 39-foot final drop back into the station.
History and Legacy
The ride occupies the building that formerly held Kongfrontation, a King Kong-themed tram attraction that closed in September 2002 to make way for the $40 million Mummy project. Universal Studios Hollywood later opened its own version of the ride in 2004, and both installations have received periodic technical and effects upgrades over the years while retaining the same core layout and launch system.
