Rapterra is a steel launched wing roller coaster at Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia, built by Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard. It opened on March 29, 2025, in the park’s Jungle X-Pedition section, replacing the former Volcano: The Blast Coaster attraction.

The ride holds the distinction of being the world’s tallest and longest launched wing coaster, using a linear synchronous motor (LSM) launch system to send riders from 0 to 65 mph in about four seconds before they wing their way through a course of airtime and inversions.

The Ride Experience

Riders board trains seated in pairs along either side of the track, with nothing below or above them, giving wing-coaster seating its signature exposed feel. The LSM launch accelerates the train to 65 mph in around four seconds, immediately leading into a wingover turn.

From there the layout works through a dive loop, an S-turn, a wing slide, a corkscrew, and an airtime hill before returning to the brake run, with the full circuit lasting about 1 minute and 29 seconds. Two 20-rider trains keep the line moving, with a stated hourly capacity of roughly 1,140 riders.

A Record-Setting Addition

Rapterra was built as part of a roughly $30 million investment and took the place of Volcano: The Blast Coaster, a launched inverted coaster that had closed years earlier. At 145 feet tall and 3,086 feet long, it stands as the world’s tallest and longest launched wing coaster, a category B&M pioneered with its wing coaster model line.

The dinosaur-adjacent theming and name tie into the surrounding Jungle X-Pedition area, giving Kings Dominion a modern, high-launch centerpiece alongside its existing lineup of steel coasters.
