Primeval Whirl was a steel spinning Wild Mouse roller coaster in Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama, part of DinoLand U.S.A. at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Opened on March 31, 2002, it was the first roller coaster to debut at the park, pairing a jerky wild-mouse layout with individually spinning four-person cars and a lighthearted time-travel, dinosaur-extinction storyline.
Manufactured by the French company Reverchon Industries, Primeval Whirl actually consisted of two side-by-side tracks running in opposite directions, but unlike the mirrored twin tracks of Space Mountain, both Primeval Whirl tracks shared an identical layout. The uncontrolled spin of each car meant no two rides ever felt quite the same. Disney permanently closed the attraction in 2020 and demolished it the following year to make way for future DinoLand development.

The Ride Experience
Riders boarded one of two identically laid-out tracks, arranged side by side to run in opposite directions, inside cars themed as makeshift ‘time vehicles’ built by the fictional Chester and Hester. The wild-mouse layout delivered sharp switchbacks and sudden drops, while the free-spinning cars added an unpredictable extra layer of disorientation on top of the track’s twists.
The queue and setting leaned into a deliberately campy, roadside-carnival aesthetic that contrasted with the rest of Animal Kingdom’s naturalistic theming, part of the intentionally kitschy design of Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama.
Closure and Legacy
Disney reduced Primeval Whirl to seasonal operation in mid-2019, then closed it in March 2020 alongside pandemic-related park closures. In July 2020, Disney confirmed the ride would not reopen, making it the first roller coaster permanently removed from a Disney park in the U.S. Demolition of the track and surrounding structures took place in late 2021, clearing the site for future DinoLand U.S.A. redevelopment.
