Crowned by a 60-foot fire-breathing dragon, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts is the centerpiece of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida. Opened July 8, 2014 on the former site of the Jaws ride, this Intamin creation blurs the line between roller coaster and dark ride more completely than almost any attraction ever built.

Riders descend into the vaults of Gringotts Wizarding Bank just as Harry, Ron, and Hermione break in — and spend five minutes caught between Bellatrix Lestrange, Voldemort, and a very angry security dragon.

Coaster or Dark Ride? Both.

Escape from Gringotts pairs 2,000 feet of launched steel coaster track with motion-based vehicles, massive wraparound 3-D projection domes, animatronics, and physical sets. The trains freely pivot and tilt to face the action, drop down a 50-degree pitch, and pause inside show scenes blending live-action footage with animation. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Warwick Davis all lent their likenesses to the ride film.

The Queue Is an Attraction Too

The walk-through of Gringotts’ marble lobby — staffed by unnervingly lifelike animatronic goblins — is one of the most detailed queues in the industry. It needs to be: at opening, waits stretched up to seven hours, with the full queue able to extend 2.5 miles on the busiest days. At roughly five minutes of ride time, the payoff is generous; see where that lands among the longest ride times at theme parks.

Awards and Legacy

Escape from Gringotts was a Golden Ticket Awards fixture as a Top 5 dark ride from 2014 through 2018, peaking at #2 Best Dark Ride in 2016. Together with Hogsmeade’s Forbidden Journey and the Hogwarts Express connecting the two parks, it completed Universal’s Wizarding World and set the bar for the hybrid coaster/dark-ride genre.

FAQ

Is Escape from Gringotts scary or intense?

It’s more immersive than intense. There are launches, a 50-degree drop, and sudden movements, but no inversions and no extreme heights. The 42-inch height requirement makes it accessible to most school-age kids.

Does Escape from Gringotts go upside down?

No. The ride has zero inversions — the drama comes from launches, the steep 50° descent, tilting vehicles, and 3-D projection effects.

How long is the ride?

About 5 minutes over 2,000 feet (610 m) of track — long for a coaster because much of it is spent inside elaborate show scenes.
