The Golden Coast Run links five California parks from the 1924 wooden Giant Dipper on the Santa Cruz pier down to the launch coasters at SeaWorld San Diego, covering about 9 hr 30 min and 466 miles of driving over 6 days.

It suits coaster fans who want a mix of a century-old beachfront classic, a large Six Flags coaster lineup, a historic wooden coaster at Knott’s, Disneyland’s original mountain coasters, and a coastal finish at SeaWorld. The page below breaks the route into a stop-by-stop guide, a day-by-day plan with drive times, and notes on the one new coaster scheduled for this route in 2027.

Stop by Stop

Each stop below lists why it’s on the route, the must-rides, and a town to base yourself in.

1. Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk — Santa Cruz, CA

This oceanfront amusement park opens the trip with a genuine antique: the Giant Dipper is a wooden coaster that opened May 17, 1924, standing 70 ft tall and reaching 55 mph over a double out-and-back layout. Undertow, a Maurer spinning coaster, adds a different feel at 50 ft tall and 40 mph, and Sea Serpent, a steel sit-down family coaster running since 2000, rounds out a gentler third ride for a mixed group.

Half a day covers the coasters and boardwalk; the Boardwalk’s ride schedule is seasonal, so check which rides are running on your visit date before you go. Stay in Santa Cruz itself, or in nearby Capitola if lodging is tight.

2. Six Flags Magic Mountain — Valencia, CA

Magic Mountain carries a large lineup of steel coasters built over several decades. Tatsu, a Bolliger & Mabillard flying coaster, stands 170 ft tall and hits 62 mph with four inversions; Goliath is a steel hypercoaster reaching 235 ft tall and 85 mph with no inversions. New for 2027 and still under construction is Thrill Glider, a Vekoma suspended multi-launch Thrillglider with prone, motorbike-style seating — announced at 107 ft tall and 50 mph. It is scheduled to open sometime in 2027, not yet operating, so confirm its status before planning around it.

Budget a full day, two if Thrill Glider has opened and lines are long for it. Arrive at opening for the headliners before midday crowds build. Stay in Valencia or nearby Santa Clarita.

3. Knott’s Berry Farm — Buena Park, CA

Knott’s is home to GhostRider, the longest wooden coaster on the West Coast at 118 ft tall, 56 mph, and 4,533 ft of track, opened in 1998. Xcelerator, an Intamin launch coaster from 2002, still accelerates riders from 0 to 82 mph in 2.3 seconds up its 205 ft top hat tower.

A full day covers the coaster lineup comfortably. Ride GhostRider early since it’s the park’s most popular line-builder. Stay in Buena Park, or in Anaheim given the short drive to the next stop.

4. Disneyland — Anaheim, CA

Disneyland adds historical weight to the trip: Matterhorn Bobsleds, opened in 1959, is recognized as the first permanently installed tubular steel track roller coaster, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a mine-train coaster that has run since 1979. Space Mountain, an indoor steel coaster from 1977, is a third solid pick if time allows.

Plan a full day at minimum — Disneyland rewards more time than any other stop on this route. Use the park’s virtual queue or paid Lightning Lane option for Space Mountain if lines are long. Stay in Anaheim near the resort.

5. SeaWorld San Diego — San Diego, CA

The trip ends back on the coast. Electric Eel, a Premier Rides launch coaster that opened in 2018, reaches 150 ft tall and 62 mph with one inversion. Manta is a launched family coaster reaching 43 mph, kept to a 30 ft height due to coastal building limits, that has run since 2012.

A half day covers both coasters; a full day lets you add the marine life exhibits and shows. Check showtimes so they don’t overlap with your ride window. Stay in San Diego, near Mission Bay for the shortest drive to the park.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

The long first drive gets its own day so no single day combines a full park visit with hours behind the wheel.

Day 1: Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Ride the Giant Dipper, Undertow, and Sea Serpent, and spend the rest of the day on the boardwalk and beach.

Day 2: Drive to Valencia

Drive about 6 hr / 311 miles from Santa Cruz to Valencia. Treat this as a travel day; arrive in the afternoon or evening and settle in before the next day’s park visit.

Day 3: Six Flags Magic Mountain

Full day at the park, prioritizing Tatsu, Goliath, and — if it’s open — Thrill Glider.

Day 4: Drive to Buena Park, then Knott’s Berry Farm

Drive about 1 hr 15 min / 58 miles in the morning, then spend the rest of the day at Knott’s riding GhostRider and Xcelerator.

Day 5: Drive to Anaheim, then Disneyland

A short, roughly 15-minute / 7-mile drive gets you to Anaheim with most of the day free for Disneyland, including Matterhorn Bobsleds and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Day 6: Drive to San Diego, then SeaWorld

Drive about 1 hr 45 min / 90 miles to San Diego, then close the trip with Electric Eel and Manta at SeaWorld.

New for 2027 on This Route

Thrill Glider at Six Flags Magic Mountain is the only announced new coaster on this route for 2027. It’s a Vekoma suspended multi-launch Thrillglider with prone, motorbike-style seating, announced at 107 ft tall and 50 mph, under construction on the former Golden Bear Theatre site between Full Throttle and the park’s drop tower. No opening date beyond “2027” has been announced, and it is not open as of this writing — confirm its status before building a visit around it. It adds a genuinely new ride format to an already large coaster lineup rather than replacing anything else on this itinerary.

When to Go

Spring and fall generally offer shorter lines at the Southern California parks than summer, with milder weather for a week of park-hopping and driving. Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is the one stop with a notably seasonal schedule — in 2026 it ran rides daily through summer and on a reduced weekends-and-holidays schedule the rest of the year — so time Day 1 accordingly.

Before booking, confirm each park’s published 2027 calendar, since 2027 schedules were not all published as of this writing, and check whether Thrill Glider has opened at Magic Mountain.

Road Trip Tips

A Six Flags Gold Pass or higher covers both Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott’s Berry Farm, since both parks are under the same ownership following the Six Flags–Cedar Fair merger — worth comparing against single-day tickets for those two stops if visiting both, but confirm 2027 pass tiers and benefits before buying.

All five parks sit in Pacific Time, so there’s no time-zone adjustment on this route. Pack layers: Santa Cruz and San Diego can be cool and foggy in the morning near the water, while Valencia, Buena Park, and Anaheim run noticeably hotter inland — and build extra buffer time into the Day 2 and Day 6 drives, both of which pass through or near Los Angeles traffic corridors.

The Golden Coast Run FAQs

How many days do you need for The Golden Coast Run?

Plan on 6 days: one per park plus a dedicated travel day for the roughly 6-hour drive between Santa Cruz and Valencia. Travelers who want more time at Disneyland or want to catch Thrill Glider at Magic Mountain once it opens should add a day.

Can you drive the Golden Coast Run in the opposite direction, starting in San Diego?

Yes — the same five stops and drive times work in reverse. Running north to south as laid out here puts the trip’s longest drive early, right after a relaxed beachfront day, rather than saving it for later in the trip.

When is the best time to do this road trip?

Spring or fall, for lighter crowds and milder weather at the Southern California parks. If Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s full ride schedule matters to you, note that it typically runs daily only through summer and on a reduced schedule the rest of the year — confirm the 2027 calendar before booking.

Is there one coaster on this trip worth planning the whole route around?

The Giant Dipper at Santa Cruz is the trip’s historic anchor, a wooden coaster running since 1924. If you’re drawn to new rides instead, Thrill Glider’s scheduled 2027 debut at Six Flags Magic Mountain is the most notable addition on the route, though it is not open yet.
