A Working Roadhouse Since the 1800s
Ernst Gruene settled the area northeast of New Braunfels in the 1870s, and his son Henry built the dance hall in 1878 to give local farming families a place to socialize on weekends. The building’s tin roof, screened sides, and simple wood construction were practical choices for the Texas heat, and that same layout has survived largely unchanged for well over a century, earning the venue its National Register of Historic Places listing in 1975.
Rather than being preserved as a museum piece, Gruene Hall has stayed in continuous use as a working venue, which is a large part of what makes its history notable. Generations of dancers, from farm families in the 1800s to modern-day tourists, have shared the same worn wooden floor.
