From Jazz Cellar to Beatles Birthplace
The Cavern Club began as a jazz venue, but by the early 1960s it had shifted toward the raw, guitar-driven sound sweeping Liverpool’s music scene. A young local band called The Beatles played their first Cavern set in February 1961, and over the next two and a half years they became the club’s most frequent act, playing lunchtime and evening sessions that built a devoted local following long before international stardom. Other Merseybeat acts, including Gerry and the Pacemakers and The Searchers, also passed through its arched brick tunnels during the same era.
Demolition, Rebirth, and a Living Legacy
The original Cavern Club closed in 1973 and was filled in during nearby railway construction, effectively destroying the historic cellar. In 1984, a reconstructed Cavern Club reopened close to the original site, built partly from bricks salvaged from the demolished venue. Under owners Bill Heckle and Dave Jones since 1991, the club has operated continuously as a live music venue, hosting around 40 bands a week and drawing musicians and fans from around the world, including a surprise 2018 set by Paul McCartney.
