The Jets’ history runs through two cities. The original Jets played at the Winnipeg Arena from 1972 to 1996, first in the WHA and then the NHL. Today’s franchise began as the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena in 1999 and moved to Winnipeg in 2011. In September 2026 the NHL put the original Jets’ history with today’s team, so all three arenas are part of one record.
Here is each home in order, with the years the team played there, what happened there and what stands on the site today. Each one links to our full guide.

Jets Arena FAQ
Where did the Jets play before Canada Life Centre?
In Atlanta, as the Thrashers, at Philips Arena from 1999 to 2011. Before that, the original Winnipeg Jets played at the Winnipeg Arena from 1972 until 1996, when they moved to Phoenix.
Are the original Jets part of today’s Jets history?
Yes, since September 24, 2026, when the NHL moved the original Jets’ records from the inactive Coyotes franchise to the current Jets. The team’s records now cover the 1972–1996 Jets, the Thrashers and the Jets since 2011.
Why did the original Jets leave Winnipeg?
A falling Canadian dollar, rising salaries and an aging arena with no luxury suites left the team losing money, and a plan to replace the Winnipeg Arena failed. The team was sold and became the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996.
Is the Winnipeg Arena still standing?
No. It closed in November 2004 after the MTS Centre opened and was demolished in March 2006. The Polo Park North retail and office complex stands on the site. Philips Arena in Atlanta is still in use as State Farm Arena, home of the Hawks.
Where do the Jets play now?
At Canada Life Centre on Portage Avenue in downtown Winnipeg, built on the site of the old Eaton’s store. It seats 15,225 for hockey.
