New York Knicks Arena History: Every Home Since 1946

The Knicks were one of the original teams of the BAA, the league that became the NBA, and have always played in Manhattan. They have had three homes: the third Madison Square Garden on Eighth Avenue, the 69th Regiment Armory for many early games and, since 1968, the current Madison Square Garden above Penn Station.

Here is every home in order, with the years the Knicks played there, what made each one matter and what stands on the site today. Each arena with a ThrillZing guide links to it.

Knicks Arena FAQ

Where did the Knicks play before the current Madison Square Garden?

At the third Madison Square Garden, on Eighth Avenue between 49th and 50th streets, from 1946 until it closed in February 1968. Because the Garden’s schedule was crowded, they also played many home games at the 69th Regiment Armory from 1946 to 1960.

How many arenas have the Knicks had?

Three: Madison Square Garden III, the 69th Regiment Armory and the current Madison Square Garden. The Knicks’ first game ever, on November 1, 1946, was a road game at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.

Why did the Knicks play at the 69th Regiment Armory?

The Garden owned the Knicks, but it also booked hockey, college basketball, boxing, the circus and more, so dates were hard to get. The armory, a National Guard drill hall, hosted Knicks games from 1946 to 1960, including several NBA Finals games.

Is the old Madison Square Garden still standing?

No. The third Garden closed in February 1968 and was demolished in 1968–69; One Worldwide Plaza now stands on the site. The 69th Regiment Armory is still standing and still used by the National Guard.

Where do the Knicks play now?

At Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan, above Penn Station, their home since 1968. It seats 20,012 for basketball, and it is where the Knicks’ 2026 championship team played.
